DetailAndré Komatsu's new series of mobile sculptures addresses the economic asymmetries and dependency relationships between Latin America and the United States. In Untitled (October 31, 2025), the artist materializes the exchange rate disparity between the dollar and the Argentine peso on the day the work was created: four 25-cent coins are balanced by an exponential amount of Argentine cents. Suspended on segments of barbed wire—a material historically associated with territorial expansion, control, and exclusion—the coins make unequal power relations visible. While the Argentine cents remain attached to the ends of the structure, the American coins hang from a golden chain, evoking wealth and economic influence. By transforming a monetary relationship into a sculptural structure, Komatsu reveals the dynamics of dependency, indebtedness, and imbalance that underpin the global economy, questioning the costs necessary to maintain the appearance of stability in an order marked by inequality.

DetailA 35-square-meter sculptural structure, delicately constructed from common steel pipes found in construction projects, emerges as a monument to both fragility and strength. Standing 6 meters tall with equally sized sides, the central structure is a testament to human mastery over raw materials, unified by steel clamps that confer a sense of integrity and connection. However, resting delicately on this seemingly solid base are small sculptural objects, whose presence interrupts and counterbalances the structural harmony. These objects appear frozen in time, emanating an aura of petrification that contrasts with the fluidity of the steel pipes. They not only challenge the physical stability of the installation but also evoke metaphors about systems of power and authority, representing the weight and counterweight that permeate the hierarchical structures of society. An intricate network of steel chains traverses the structure, connecting to each of these sculptural objects. This metallic web not only supports the individual elements, but also weaves a visual narrative of interdependence and tension, symbolizing the complexities of power and control relationships.
